Colour Changing Polymer may allow physicians to detect Traumatic Brain Injuries

Research is under way to determine whether a colour changing polymer can be used on helmets to determine whether blows are hard enough to inflict a TBI. Currently no easy way exists to tell if someone has sustained a brain injury. This colour changing polymer could be used on a patch on the helmet and would provide an obvious signal to coaches, by standers and doctors whether there is a need for further care.

TBI and concussions can have long reaching long term impacts on mental, physical and emotional wellbeing. Some symptoms don’t manifest for days or years after the injury is sustained. Early treatment is key to treating some damage to the brain.

The polymer is molded into a structure that works like photonic crystals. When various forces are applied the colour of the crystals changes consistently, making it a good indicator for the count of force sustained in a blow.
