Beyond enforcement, road safety in Waterloo Region is supported by innovative initiatives and community partnerships. The 2025 Road Safety Plan focuses on reducing fatal collisions through technology, strategic enforcement, and public engagement.

Technology in Road Safety

WRPS is leveraging Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) technology to identify and remove suspended and prohibited drivers from the roads. In 2024, ALPR played a role in 1,966 traffic-related occurrences, assisting in apprehending unsafe drivers.

Illegal Street Racing and Modified Vehicles

WRPS actively participates in Project E.R.A.S.E., a province-wide initiative targeting illegal street racing and modified vehicles. In 2025, Neighbourhood Policing members will receive enhanced training to identify and inspect illegally modified vehicles, preventing dangerous "Takeover" events.

Rural and Regional Road Safety

In 2024, 46% of fatal collisions and 20% of major injury collisions occurred in rural areas, where high speeds and unpredictable conditions increase risks. WRPS is prioritizing enforcement in school zones, intersections, and high-risk rural areas.

Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) Enforcement

With two fatal CMV-related collisions in 2024, WRPS continues collaborating with the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) to enhance CMV inspections. In 2024, 164 commercial vehicles were inspected, and 27% were taken out of service due to serious mechanical defects.

Community Engagement and Education

WRPS is expanding public awareness campaigns through social media and partnerships with organizations like Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), the Ontario Traffic Council, and the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police. These partnerships promote responsible driving behaviours and support education efforts.

Through targeted enforcement, advanced technology, and community collaboration, WRPS is committed to making Waterloo Region’s roads safer. As the 2025 Road Safety Plan unfolds, these initiatives will play a key role in reducing collisions and protecting all road users.
