With yet another rainstorm and snow/ice storm under out belts for the Region this winter, it’s a good time to review helpful winter driving tips. Driving correctly, with a car in good shape and winter tires can significantly reduce the chance of you being in a winter car crash.

OPP have been busy responding to collisions this winter on the snow- and ice-covered roads and the OPP and CAA offer the following tips to help you stay safe:

  1. SLOW DOWN
  2. If you don’t have snow tires, consider buying some
  3. Clear all the snow and ice off your car – top, windows, and lights front and back
  4. Wait until the inside and outside of the windshield is clear of fog and frost before you drive
  5. Anticipate longer braking distances
  6. Watch out for other users on the road
  7. Carry a winter safety kit with shovel, blanket, traction devices, food and drink
  8. Carry extra windshield washer fluid
  9. Keep you cell phone charger in the vehicle
  10. Keep your fuel tank at least ½ full all the time
  11. Drive with all your lights on
  12. Don’t use cruise control

If you get stuck stay calm. Get help to push the car out, use your shovel to clear snow away from your tail pipe to avoid CO poisoning, keep a window cracked open for fresh air.
