TackleBar – An alternative to Football |

Football and flag football are considered risky sports in terms of concussion risk. A recent study found that flag football is in fact more dangerous than regular football. Researchers think that this is due mainly to the lack of safety equipment worn in flag football.
A new alternative to the two sports is taking off in 21 American states and is being debuted in the Mississauga football league. It’s was spotlighted last week at the 13th World Congress on Brain Injury in Toronto.
Tacklebar resembles traditional football except that rather than tackling the opposing player to the ground, or snatching a flag off their belt, Tacklebar requires the player to remove a foam bar from the opposing player’s back.
It’s a new format of football created by two American parents Brigid and Jeremy Ling of Minnesota, who were attempting to reduce the risk of concussion and traumatic brain injury in the sport. It’s gaining popularity in many American states and even in some Canadian high schools.
The researchers from Minneapolis Medical Research Foundation highlighted the safety of the port at the World Congress of Brain Injury in Toronto citing the following statistics:
- Flag Football injuries 5.7/1000 exposures
- Full contact football injuries 2.2/1000 exposures
- Tacklebar injuries 0.3/1000 exposures
It appears there is now an alternative to full contact football for those families who wish a safer playing environment for their children and themselves.
