Technology helping to reduce risk of blind spots

One of the biggest struggles all drivers face when sharing the road with other drivers is blind spots. A problem that has been around since cars were created, blind spots are the areas around a car that the driver cannot see around them, which increases the chances of accidents.  Every new car designed and put out into the streets has been fashioned in the attempt to shrink its blind spots, or make them completely disappear. Through the use of new technology and creative innovation, manufacturers have designed cars to have shorter dashboards which make the windshields closer to improve driver visibility. As well, new cars are starting to follow a “Cab-rearward” protocol, in which the window supports (“A-pillars”) and base of the windshield to the hood (“touchdown points”) are pulled back, allowing better visibility. Some designs even give customers the option of extended, wider driver-side mirrors. Some manufacturers are even planning to install technology to combat blind spots through sensors, cameras, radars, signals and sounds to alert drivers or help them to become more aware of the areas they can’t see around them. However, with all these advancements,  blind spots will still continue to be a problem drivers face when hitting the road, so it is important that drivers check over their shoulders and always be on the lookout for cars and other users of the roads and sidewalks when changing lanes or reversing.
